Who Do You Say That I Am?: Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost 2023

In this Sunday’s Gospel reading Jesus asks Peter to answer the question “who do you say that I am?” And while Jesus praises Peter’s response, it actually doesn’t clarify things much. Indeed, the Church has been struggling with the question of the nature of Jesus since he first asked it of Peter. But the real question now is who do you say that Jesus is? Is he uniquely divine, as the old creed says, “one is substance with the Father?” Or is he the son of God in the sense that we are all sons and daughters of God?
